Panel Discussion on Joint Software Development for Simulations - the case of AMUSE

Panelists: Arjen van Elteren and Piet Hut

Large-scale simulations in astrophysics require computer codes that are too complex to be written by only one graduate student during the few years it takes to get a PhD. Instead, we are learning to collaborate on writing codes together, or at the very least writing codes that glue existing codes together. A prime example of such an attempt is the AMUSE project, led by Simon Portegies Zwart, professor of computational astrophysics in Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands. Note that AMUSE is a fully open source project, with lots of room for amateur astronomers as well as interested professionals in other field to join in.
