We Are Starstuff: the Cosmic Origins of the Chemical Elements

Talk by Rob Knop

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium, And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium... but where did they all come from? The Universe originiated in the Big Bang, but it turns out that the Big Bang only produced Hydrogen, Helium, and a trace amount of Lithium and Beryllium. How do we know that the Big Bang only produced the lightest of elements? And where did the rest come from? Prospero Frobozz will discuss the creation of the elements in the Big Bang, and will describe how everything else, including the Carbon and Oxygen that is crucial to build *you*, was created inside stars, and in particular inside exploding stars.
