Supermassive Black Holes at the Cores of Galaxies

In the last decade, we've figured out that at the center of every big galaxy, including our own, lurks a black hole that may be millions or even billions of times the mass of the Sun. We've known for a couple of decades that these black holes are the engines that power active galactic nuclei, including quasars; more recently, we've come to understand that these black holes are intimately linked to the evolution of the galaxies themselves. In this talk, I'll give an overview of what we know about supermassive black holes and their role in galaxy behavior and evolution.
