The CRAB Supernova cover-up: SN1054 between science and history

This talk was first given by Professor Giuseppe Longo (Univ. of Naples) on Dec. 20, 2009.

The 1054 SN was a very conspicuous object which remained visible even during the day for a long period of time. It was extensively observed in the near and far East but, with one exception, it was almost completely neglected by European astronomers. The most likely explanation of this silence is related to the role its appearance played in the events which led to the East-West schism.
