The Recent Bright Supernova in M101
A talk by Rob Knop of Quest University Canada, given on September 24, 2011.
At the end of August 2011, a thermonuclear supernova exploded in galaxy M101. This is extremely exciting, because it's the first truly nearby Type Ia supernova in over two decades. What's more exciting is that the supernova was discovered less than a day after it exploded, allowing follow-up observations to be made on a very nearby supernova right after the explosion. This supernova is still hot, and very little has been published on it so far, but in this talk I will tell you what we do know about it. I'll also put it into context, telling you some of the outstanding questions about thermonuclear supernovae and why we're so interested in it.
