Understanding Redshift: Doppler, Gravitational, Cosmological

If you follow astronomy, and in particular cosmology, at all, you've heard the term "redshift". Astronomers of a cosmological bent have been accused of wanting to measure everything— time, distance, the price of tea in China— in redshift. And you may have heard of the Doppler Shift. It turns out that there's more to redshift than the Doppler Shift. In this talk, I'll describe what redshift is, and explain what happens in nature that can give rise to redshift. I'll also give a few examples of the enormous importance redshift has in a wide range of astronomical measurements.
